Brothers of Italy and Giorgia Meloni also rejoice in the Pontine province. Even if the definitive data are not official throughout Italy and the counting is still underway, in these European elections the prime minister’s party confirms its leadership in the country, and the Pontine territory is the mirror of this. FdI is close to 35%, tripling the figure of five years ago. Forza Italia is also growing, exceeding 16% and holding the Democratic Party (here are the results in detail).

The turnout is peaking

But there is one fact above all to reflect on, and the first to have to do so should be the parties, and that is turnout. It collapses in the province of Latina where it doesn’t even reach 45%. This means that on the weekend of 8 and 9 June one in two Pontinians decided not to go to the polls. There are many reasons behind the abstention but it cannot be hidden from the fact that many voters – in the province as well as in the rest of the country where turnout is close to 50% – no longer feel represented by the parties. They no longer feel represented by this often overly shouted and superficial policy, which perhaps pays little attention to the real needs of citizens. The percentages of the main lists challenging the European elections have in some cases grown – but often not the number of preferences – but it goes without saying that with a turnout of 45% it certainly cannot be said to represent a large portion of the electorate .

European elections: definitive turnout data

The province of Latina chooses Giorgia Meloni

But looking at the raw data at the local level, Fratelli d’Italia confirms itself as the first party with 34.8% of the votes and 68,762 preferences. Five years ago there were almost 25 thousand and the percentage was 10.5%. It rewarded the choice made by the Prime Minister – candidate as the leader in all the constituencies – to polarize the vote towards herself: she obtained 40,765 preferences in the Pontine territory, ahead of everyone, not just in her party. A sign that the Brothers of Italy is Giorgia Meloni even if in the province of Latina alone there were more than 20 thousand votes for Nicola Procaccini.

Well Forza Italia, the League collapses

In the Pontine centre-right, Forza Italia is also celebrating, coming close to 16.5% of the votes with 32,505 preferences and doing better than five years ago when the preferences were 28 thousand which had brought it to 12%. However, the League certainly has nothing to smile about as it collapses (almost 30 percentage points less than five years ago) and is the fifth party in the province of Latina. Long gone are the glories of that 39% of the 2019 European elections that rewarded Matteo Salvini’s list with over 91 thousand preferences in the Pontine territory. Now the preferences have dropped to 18 thousand and the party stops at 9%.

The Democratic Party holds, the Alliance of the Greens and the Left grows

If the Democratic Party, in percentage terms, is the one that has grown the most in the country compared to the 2022 elections and has done better than five years ago, it remains stable in the province. It exceeds the 15% barely reached in the 2019 European elections but with a few fewer preferences (then there were almost 35 thousand and today there are almost 30 thousand). It is not an easy job that the Democratic Party has to do in a historically right-wing territory but with Elly Schlein in the wake of what is happening in the rest of Italy it can manage to grow further. The Greens and Left Alliance did well, exceeding 5% (at the political elections it was well below 3%).

Male M5S, United States of Europe and Action

Another party that emerges with broken bones from this electoral round is the 5 Star Movement. According to five years ago with over 39 thousand preferences and almost 17%, today it drops below 10% and halves the preferences. Matteo Renzi’s United States of Europe list, led by the Pontine candidate, the mayor of Minturno and president of the Province Gerardo Stefanelli, does not even reach 5%. However, Calenda’s share slightly exceeds 2%.

The vote in Latina city

Fratelli d’Italia confirms itself as the first party also in Latina city where it even reaches 38% with almost 17 thousand preferences (five years ago there were just over 5 thousand). Behind the Democratic Party which arrives is almost 17%. Matteo Salvini’s League holds sway in the capital, exceeding 11%, ahead of the 5 Star Movement which does not reach 10% and Forza Italia which stops at 8.7%.

Preferences

The most voted candidate from the province of Latina was Nicola Procaccini. Among Giorgia Meloni’s loyalists, with her 27 thousand preferences, collected in the Pontine territory, it is practically certain that she will be elected to the European Parliament again. The same goes for Salvatore De Meo who with 23,448 preferences in the province of Latina within Forza Italia surpasses even Antonio Tajani. The election for Giovanna Miele, candidate of the League, was difficult, but she still achieved a good result in the Pontine territory: with over 7 thousand preferences she even surpassed General Roberto Vannacci. Just over 2 thousand votes for Franco Cardinale. Gerardo Stefanelli with 5,737 preferences led the United States of Europe list but it seems impossible to elect him. Then Federica Lauretti did not reach 2 thousand votes for the 5 Star Movement, while there were 817 for Sergio Ulgiati and 464 for Paola Bernasconi who were running with the Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra list.
