Turnout in the 2024 European and municipal elections

The local and European elections are in full swing and opened at 3pm on Saturday 8 June. After the polls close at 11pm, there is another full day of voting on Sunday 9 June, starting at 7am and again until 11pm. Throughout the province of Arezzo people vote (pink ballot) to elect the representatives of the III Circumscription of Central Italy in Europe (which includes Tuscany, Umbria, Marche and Lazio), while in 26 Arezzo municipalities there are as many mayors and councils whose terms of office are expiring and there is also voting for municipal elections (blue ballot). The challenges in the major municipalities are particularly felt: Cortona and San Giovanni Valdarno. And here is the first data on the turnout of the electoral round. In 2019, at the end of the polls closing, 67.35% of those entitled to vote in the Arezzo area voted.

Attendance at 11pm on Saturday 8 June

The average turnout at the municipal elections in the province of Arezzo at 11pm on Saturday 8 June was 21.22%. Definitely higher than the European figure, which reaches 17.66% in the Arezzo area. Obviously the municipal challenges increase the continental vote figure precisely in the 26 municipalities where the new mayor is being chosen. So far the municipality with the greatest participation is Chitignano with 27.23% turnout in the municipal elections and 27.92% in the European elections. Here are the data from the most anticipated administrative elections in the province: Cortona 20.36%, San Giovanni Valdarno 22.30%, Subbiano 24%. The municipality with the lowest performance is Caprese Michelangelo: on the first day just 5.43% of those entitled to vote voted. Making a comparison with the rest of Tuscany, Arezzo’s turnout in municipal elections is slightly lower (21.22% versus 21.69%). Ditto the comparison with the regional data of the European ones (17.66% against 18.77%). However, Arezzo is above both the district figure (stationary at 16%) and the national figure for the European elections (below 15%). Furthermore, the Arezzo provincial data is higher than the national administrative data (20.17%).
