European elections: twelve lists in the running, ten candidates from Trentino – News

TRENT. There are 476,222 Trentino voters (241,628 women and 234,594 men) who this afternoon – from 3pm to 11pm – and tomorrow – from 7am to 11pm – can go to the polls to vote for the renewal of the European Parliament.

In the North-East constituency there are 12 lists competing with 166 candidates competing to win one of the 15 seats available. There are a total of 10 Trentino candidates (by birth or adoption).to which are added as many from Alto Adige

In the Municipality of Trento alone there are 99,073 voters mostly women (51,407). For the first time, off-site university students will also vote here: there are 904 of them. Trentino is part of the Northeastern constituency with Alto Adige, Veneto, Emilia Romagna and Friuli Venezia Giulia, where 15 MEPs are elected.

The widespread concern is that we are witnessing a sharp drop in turnout, both because the European elections tend to always score lower percentages than other elections, having never warmed hearts much, and because even the closest consultations, such as the Provincial or the municipal ones, have also begun to register a worrying disaffection in Trentino.

European elections, how to vote on 8 and 9 June

Polling stations open from 3pm to 11pm on Saturday and from 7am to 11pm on Sunday

Five years ago, in the 2019 European elections, the voters in the province of Trento were 57.36%, now there is a fear of the risk of slipping below 50%, if we consider that in the provincial elections last October there were only 58.41% of voters (a drop compared to the 2022 elections where it reached 69.62%) and in most recent municipal elections two Sundays ago in Rovereto and in four other Trentino municipalities, with a total of 52,280 Trentino voters called to the polls, only 49.6% voted. In conjunction with the European elections today and tomorrow in Rovereto they will also vote for the run-off between the two mayoral candidates Giulia Robol and Gianpiero Lui.

In the European elections, voting is done using a proportional system (with a threshold of 4%), then the voter is asked to mark the party symbol with a cross. The lists are not blocked, but up to three preferences can be expressed. In the case of two or three preferences, one must be of a different gender (example: a woman and a man, or two women and a man or two men and a woman). LP
