CASTELFRANCO VENETO (TREVISO) – Generosity in memory of Monica “Moki” Reginato, who passed away last April 20th in her beloved mountains, is bearing its first fruits. While the subscription in her name continues, they have been recently 730 euros were delivered to alleviate the suffering of children of Tigray, an area of Ethiopia that was the scene of a bloody civil war. The mountaineer from Castellano was particularly struck by the condition of the children in that area and she promised to help them. It was her friend Monica Venturin who took up the baton, who, together with some of her friends, turned to Kirtos Sltan, Moki’s contact in Ethiopia. Thanks to the generosity of many people, the goal initially set at 3 thousand euros was quickly reached and a first part of the funds was delivered to Kirtos.

Died in the mountains, fundraising to remember Moki

Monica Venturin comments: «Kirtos told me that in the Mekelle camp there were several children, who were almost all moved to other institutions or adopted. Except for 14 children, who remained in the camp and whom no one cares about. There situation is dramaticso much so that they are forced to move around the city every day beg for food, also exposing themselves to all the risks that this entails. For me it is It is inconceivable that a 4-5 year old child should spend his time begging to eatrather than playing or studying.” With this first tranche, Kirtos bought basic necessities, such as flour, oil, soap: the goal is now to find some adult figure who can take care of them, even just to cook food. Then there is the desire to be able to offer these children an education, sending them to school or calling a teacher to the camp who can provide the basic notions (reading, writing, arithmetic), in order to make them more independent.

The desire

«I hope that this help continues over time, at least until these children can be adopted or find more dignified accommodation. I know that Moki’s family members, who I contacted before starting this fundraiser, are also very happy and moved” continues Monica, who also underlines Kirtos’ correctness and transparency: “We send them small sums to understand how the money is managed. Kirtos sent me a summary of all the expenses, also specifying how much each individual child received.” Finally, some heart-warming news: «The children asked Kirtos who this Moki is, the “yellow woman” who sent the help. When Kirtos told them that she is an Italian lady, without children (hiding the tragic disappearance from them), the children asked, since they no longer have their parents, if they could be her children.”
