Freedivers hunting for rubbish among the seabed

Marina di Pisa is also among the Italian locations that will host the sixth edition of Apnea clearer, the national freediving waste collection competition.

In addition to Pisa there are Genoa, Rome, Mola di Bari, Ustica and Torre del Greco. The event is coordinated by Freediving Academythe freediving school presided over by the multiple world champion Umberto Pelizzari, and sponsored by Wwf. Waste collection takes place in the form of a competition between teams of “sea cleaners”, with the aim of removing the material that was brought back to the beaches by storm surges during the winter.

In 2023, the approximately 100 volunteers involved in the initiative removed it from the seabed 6 and a half quintals of waste, of which 17 are bulky. Tomorrow the clean seabed operation will return to the Pisan coast for the third consecutive year, enriching itself with further scientific value. “Thanks to Cupid project -explains Danilo Cialoni of Spazzapnea OdV -we will identify some areas that will be cleaned all year round by volunteers, so that we can monitor the impact on the territory in the medium term”.

The local event is organized by Pisa Sub Center 8.20pm with the logistical collaboration of Port of Pisa, Yacht Club Port of Pisa, Villa Rondinithe new tourist destination of Marina di Pisa, whose development project is followed by Marina Development Corporationand the patronage of Municipality of Pisa.

The final awards ceremony will be held at 3pm, at Villa Romboli, with the participation of Simone TempestiSole Administrator of the Port of Pisa, Giulia Gambini, Councilor for environmental policies of the Municipality of Pisa, Lorenzo BaniPresident of the Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli Natural Park.
