NEW YORK, 7 JUNE – Italy was re-elected today in New York as a member of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the three-year period 2025-2027, with 183 votes out of 190 voting countries.

Within the Group of Western Countries, in the round of elections for three-year terms, Italy was therefore the country with the most votes ahead of the Netherlands, Switzerland and Canada.

The re-election, which gives continuity to the current mandate for 2022-24, is a reconfirmation of the reputation built by Italy in multilateral diplomacy for sustainability and international cooperation, consolidating in particular the Italian partnership with developing countries development and in particular with those of the African continent. A reputation built over the ten mandates held so far by Italy since the establishment of ECOSOC in 1946.

The Council is the second most representative body of the United Nations, constituting the largest global platform for all issues of sustainable development, in which not only governments but a variety of civil society actors participate.

Established by the UN Charter in 1946, the Council is made up of 54 members: 14 African countries; 11 from Asia and the Pacific; 6 from Eastern Europe; 10 from Latin America and the Caribbean and 13 from the West. (@OnuItalia)
