VARESE100 violations in 2023 and 45 in the first five months of 2024: photo traps, i.e. cameras to combat waste abandonment, are proving to be increasingly useful in Varese. In the next few days the environmental protection department will have them installed 4 others. The number of electronic eyes that will monitor the abandonment of waste on the street will thus rise to 8, allowing the local police to identify those who violate the rules.

The budget

Almost a year after the placement of the first cameras, the balance of infringements detected and high fines is important, so much so that the environmental protection department has decided to double the number of plants. Added to the 154 sanctions is a criminal proceeding for waste abandonment. The infringements concern the ban on abandoning bags or other materials established by the municipal urban hygiene regulation, which also provides sanctions against those responsible.

We need more awareness

«We are very satisfied with the results obtained: the camera traps are proving to be an increasingly useful tool, as is the collaboration with the local police and Sangalli – declares the councilor for environmental protection Nicoletta San Martino – the sanctioning aspect can certainly work as a deterrent, but, as always, we hope that it can generate greater environmental and civic awareness on the issue of the decorum of the city”. The new camera traps, which are added to the existing ones, will be positioned in critical points of the cityalso identified based on reports from neighborhood councils and citizens.
