Tax-free luxury flights, half a million in debt

Friday 07 June 2024 – 11.40am

Almost a thousand luxury air taxi flights carried out between 2021 and 2023 but without paying passenger transport taxes, developing a debt of half a million euros: the Pisa financial police discovered everything, and now 10 airlines are in trouble .

The amount of the specific state tax varies depending on the route traveled and the number of passengers transported. It is one of the so-called ‘environmental’ taxes, i.e. aimed at taxing services with a negative impact on the environment and whose revenue is primarily allocated to the protection of the ecosystem.

After having acquired and examined the single declarations of the carriers filed with the handling companies at the Galileo Galilei airport in Pisa, the financiers detected the lack of all those payments on air taxi flights amounting to half a million euros: 338,690 as tax due and the rest as an additional sanction.

The routes covered by the flights were both intercontinental and continental – Dubai, Istanbul, Nice, Amsterdam, Zurich, Tallinn, Stockholm – with 7/10 seater twin-engine Cessna jets. In detail, the cost of renting a 10-seater plane from Pisa to Dubai could have reached approximately 80,000 euros. The airlines – one fiscally resident in Italy and nine abroad in Austria, Germany, Lithuania, Serbia, Malta, Turkey, Bulgaria, Poland – will now have to pay that half million euros to the tax authorities.

In particular, against an airline flying the Serbian flag, in the face of numerous and repeated omissions in the payment of the tax on luxury flights, the proposal for a precautionary measure of an aircraft to guarantee the credit was submitted to the Revenue Agency accrued by the financial administration corresponding to over 120 thousand euros.
