Luca Zaia remembers Giacomo Matteotti in the year of the centenary of his death and the day before the opening of the reorganization of the house museum in Fratta Polesine. The president of Veneto dedicates a thought to the anti-fascist martyr 100 years after his death.

“Matteotti, a Venetian hero who at the dawn of a liberticidal dictatorship tragically paid with his life for the vision of what drama awaited the country. His death was the price of the choice to defend freedom and the courage to denounce when for many it was already more reassuring to align with the strongest. His life and even more so the death he suffered remain an example of moral rectitude without hesitation and a model for those called to represent citizens and work in defense of the institutions. It is in the midst of parliamentary work, in fact, from the seat of the Chamber to which he had been elected by popular will, that he assumed the responsibility and the risk of denouncing the illegalities, violence and arbiters of Fascism”.

Zaia recalls the death of the socialist deputy Matteotti whose murder by the fascist squads will mark the centenary in the coming days this year.

“A century ago – he continues – in these days, hours of tension took place which, on 10 June, would culminate barbarically in the kidnapping and murder of Giacomo Matteotti by a group of squad members – continues the governor -. His body was found only on 16 August and returned to Fratta Polesine, his town of origin, in the following days. The commemorations of these days confirm that for the Venetian community it is an honor in the face of history to have given the country such an important figure and to preserve his tomb and family home. Two corners of our region where the stones are memory and an invitation to reflection to understand the value of living in a free and democratic society in which civil liberties are guaranteed and find their foundation in the Constitution. A value that is such because it was paid for with their lives by people of whom the Rovigo parliamentarian is one of the highest representatives; an absolute reference for our democracy”.
