The fifteenth edition has been launched, “Walking among the Geological Landscapes of Puglia”photographic competition organized by the Order of Geologists of Puglia and the Italian Society of Environmental Geology (Sigea – APS) – Puglia section, sponsored by the Puglia region.
The first objective of the competition is to promote knowledge and valorization of sites of geological interest (geosites) and geological landscapes of Puglia.

Antonello Fiore (National President of the Italian Society of Environmental Geology): “We aim to enhance landscapes. Last year wonderful, unique places were photographed, I’m thinking of the Grotta del Trullo which is not the traditional Trullo of Alberobello but is a natural cave with an interesting geological formation. We can take the press to places with unique landscapes, to see the landscapes that were the protagonists of the previous 14 editions of the photography competition!”.

We can take the press to places with unique landscapes, to see the protagonist landscapes of the previous 14 editions of the photography competition. Or an island was photographed from above which is heart-shaped. Now we launch the fifteenth edition of “Walking among the Geological Landscapes of Puglia”. The competition, whose participation is totally free, this year includes four Sections: “Geological landscapes or geosites”, dedicated to images of places, landscapes, sites of geological value where the shapes represented are determined by the geological elements of the site; “Geology before and after Man”, dedicated to images of anthropic works that integrate into the geological or geomorphological context; “A look at the microworld of Geology”, dedicated to close-up shots of paleontological, sedimentological or petrographic elements, for example in macrophotography or under the microscope; “Geology from above”, dedicated to photos taken from above with a drone. A fourth Section dedicated to drone photos has been added to the three Sections of previous years, making the shots sent by participants with a view from above increasingly relevant. Twelve photos will be awarded, the first three classified in each section. The winning photos, selected by the specially constituted jury, will be published on the organizers’ websites and will constitute the 2025 geological calendar which will be attached to the Earth Sciences Periodical of the Order “Geologists and Territory” and distributed in public offices. Each of the awarded authors will also be given a purchase voucher of 100 (one hundred/00) euros offered by the Apogeo Srl company “. This was announced by Antonello Fiore, National President of the Italian Society of Environmental Geology.
The application for participation must be submitted by 30 September 2024 by completing the “author form” online on the websites www.sigea-aps.it/ and www.geologipuglia.it. (for info: [email protected]) while the awards ceremony will take place during a specially organized event associated with a public initiative to be held in Bari. Participation in all four sections is permitted with a maximum number of 3 works for each section.

“An important achievement which in recent years has seen not only the growth in the number of photographs, increasingly extraordinary, but the discovery of the different nuances of the Apulian geological landscape – declared Giovanna Amedei, President of the Order of Geologists of Puglia – The objective of the competition, in fact, is to promote the diffusion of a positive model of knowledge where between fossils, minerals and formations, each province tells, with its own geodiversity, its geological evolution. The invitation, therefore, to participate to ‘give’ the emotion not only of a photograph but of a part of Puglia, if anything little known, but geologically unique in its beauty”.
” This fifteenth edition of the photographic competition, launched in 2010, presents an important innovation: to give space to the increasingly frequent “views from above”, this year there will be four sections of the competition. An update that is not only technological but also involves the field of vision and interpretation of the landscape – he stated Vincenzo Iurilli, President of the Puglia Section of SIGEA-APS – which presents itself to the observer of the works. The objective, an ambivalent term in this case, remains the same as always: to involve more and more people in the careful observation of the physical territory, in search of the geological foundations of the landscape. Because looking for the right point of view, the right angle, the right light that changes with the hours and the seasons, necessarily involves abandoning the distracted and casual gaze to concentrate on an aspect, a geological phenomenon, which, to be represented effectively and communicative, inevitably arouses the desire to understand it. If what is appreciated aesthetically, by the author, by the visitor to an exhibition or by those who see the photo printed on the calendar, is recognized as part of a collective “geological heritage”, even better as a component of the geo-eco-system to which we belong and with which we must honestly deal when planning our activities and interventions, we have together climbed another step in the valorization of Earth Sciences in society”.
