The Third Council Commission of the Municipality of Reggio has given the green light for the municipal council proposal relating to the adhesion of the municipality of Reggio Calabria to the New Covenant of Mayors Europe – strengthening interventions for a fairer and more climate-neutral Europe until 2050.

With this further Act, the Falcomatà administration continues to align the Municipality of Reggio Calabria on the driving axes of the new environmental vision of the city in the context of a Europe that is attentive and vigilant about the climate future of the planet. A locally recognizable commitment that has a global impact in the sustainable economy of Europe’s environmental policies.

The commission held today and subsequently the City Council next year will give a mandate to the Mayor for the subsequent signing of the New Pact.

The Covenant of Mayors is an initiative of the European Commission to bring together in a permanent network cities that intend to launch a coordinated set of initiatives to fight climate change.

The objectives and scope of the initiative have progressively expanded over time. In 2015, through the merger with the sister initiative Mayors Adapt, the new Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy was launched, and those in the field of adaptation to climate change were added to the mitigation objectives.

The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy was launched in 2015, capitalizing on the experience gained in Europe, creating the largest movement of local authorities committed to climate change. To date, the Pact brings together approximately 12,000 members from 60 countries, involving more than 300 million people.

The signatories of the Pact undertake to reach and exceed their countries’ objectives on climate and energy (for Europe the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030), adopting an integrated approach for mitigation and adaptation to climate change and committed to translating these objectives into measures and actions outlined in an Action Plan for Sustainable Energy (SEAP) in the sectors in which they could have a direct and indirect impact, involving families and businesses in their territory .

Furthermore, Italy has always been one of the countries most represented among the signatories of the Covenant of Mayors, both due to the commitment of local authorities and the presence of numerous support structures that accompany local authorities in the implementation of the Covenant.

Today the New Covenant of Mayors subscribes to more ambitious commitments and translates them into an Action Plan for sustainable energy and the climate: the SEAP becomes SECAP. The New Paesc is the strategic planning tool through which local administrations and bodies identify the actions to be undertaken to achieve these ambitious objectives, built on three key themes: mitigation, adaptation and fight against energy poverty.
