On Wednesday, June 5, 2024, it was unveiled in front of the San Matteo Polyclinic a mural inspired by Saint Agatha to raise awareness among women in the Pavia area about joining the mammography screening organized.
The awareness campaign reaches Pavia Europe Woman Italy for compliance with mammography screening. The mural depicts a contemporary reinterpretation of Saint protectress of female breast healthcreated within the project “Every breast has a story, screening can tell it to you”.
The mural, made possible thanks to the collaboration of IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo Foundationof theHealth Protection Agency (ATS Pavia)of theTerritorial Social and Health Company (ASST Pavia) and of theAdos Pavia Associationwas created by the artist KayOne – alias Marco Mantovani – by Stradedarts-Urban Gallery Milan.
The murals as part of the national campaign “Every breast has a story. Screening can tell you”are multiplying in the capitals: the first was created in Foggia at the beginning of 2023, followed by the cities of Milan, Bergamo, Brescia, Mantua, Rome and now also in Pavia.
The data relating to participation in organized mammography screenings show participation is still too low: at a national level the average is around around 50%.
In Lombardy the membership figure in 2022 is 56% and, although it is higher than the national average, it is not a percentage we can be satisfied with.
If breast cancer is diagnosed at an early stage it can be treated more effectively, with greater possibilities of treatment and a very high chance of recovery.
«This mural aims to raise awareness throughout the city on an important issue such as prevention – explains Alessandro VenturiPresident of the IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo Foundation -. If after many years, today, breast cancer is a battle that can be won, it is thanks to the fact that, obviously, prevention and that a lot of research has been carried out which has made it possible to manage this pathology with a very high percentage of success.”
