From 7 June to 15 September 2024 FMAV – Fondazione Modena Arti Visive presents the exhibition “Faces from the Biennale” curated by Chiara Dall’Olio at the Palazzina dei Giardini, while the 60th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale is underway.

In Modena 106 black and white photographs were selected from the pool of over 10,000 shots”Art Archive Foundation“, owned by the Modena Foundation, consisting of 6×6 cm film negatives made by the photographic agency Cameraphoto of Venice.

The Images in the exhibition they talk about the most important event of Italian contemporary art recognized throughout the world, the Venice Art Biennale, using the point of view of its visitors.
Since its first edition in 1895, the Venetian event has in fact been the object of ever-increasing attention from the public, made up not only of professionals, artists, curators, critics, collectors, journalists, who consider it an unmissable meeting opportunity , but also by personalities from the world of politics and entertainment, and, increasingly, by the curious and art-loving public.

The photographs represent the inaugurations of the main exhibitions set up inside the national pavilions between 1948 and 1986.

The exhibition opens with the portrait of Palma Bucarelli, director of the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome from 1942 to 1975, portrayed in front of a Picasso at the 1948 Biennale. Then the shots gradually immortalise the visitors during the subsequent editions in rooms by Giorgio Morandi, Filippo de Pisis, Alexander Calder, Giorgio De Chirico. A perplexed Alberto Sordi peers through Alberto Viani’s sculpture “Nude” at the 1958 Biennale, an involuntary preview of the famous scenes from the film “Where are you going on holiday?” of 1978 which will see him as the protagonist in the role of inexperienced visitor to the Venetian pavilions. The exhibition recounts the presence in Venice of artists such as Jackson Pollock, Emilio Vedova, Alberto Burri, Franz Kline, Alberto Giacometti, Giuseppe Capogrossi, to name a few. read the rest of the article”

One shot portrays, in 1964, the American artist Robert Rauschenberg while he is displaying his works in the former United States Consulate in San Gregorio where he exhibits together with Jim Dine, Jasper Johns, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, Frank Stella, John Chamberlain and Claes Oldenburg. The artists Cesare Tacchi and Renato Mambor or the actress Paola Pitagora have their portraits painted together with the works of Roy Lichtenstein. But there are also faces from politics, such as Aldo Moro visiting the Alberto Burri room, or Pietro Ingrao and Tina Anselmi visiting the “Environment-Art” exhibition in the central pavilion.

And the images of the 1968 Biennial of protest still flow, including refusals to participate, demonstrations, or adhesions, such as that of artists like Pino Pascali who exhibit with the conviction that the revolutionary impact of their works could constitute protest. Or the photos from the 1972 Biennale curated by Francesco Arcangeli and Renato Barilli under the title Opera e Comportamento, which went down in history also for the provocation implemented by Gino De Dominicis with the action “Immortality Solution”. Until the 1978 Biennial”From nature to art from art to nature” with the Israeli pavilion containing a flock of live sheep partially painted blue by the artist Menashe Kadishman, protagonist together with a monumental intervention by Staccioli, of the episode “Smart holidays” within the film “Where are we going on holiday?”.

The exhibition ends with some shots from the Eighties with the works of Vito Acconci (1980), Alberto Burri, on the occasion of his solo exhibition at the former Giudecca shipyards in 1982, Giuseppe Penone and Claudio Parmiggiani in the 1986 edition entitled “Art and science”.
