TRIESTE Dengue fever is back in the news, after the two cases detected in Trieste in recent weeks. This time it is one person who is affected by the virus couple residing in via Costalungarecently returned from a trip to Colombia (Country considered an endemic area by the Higher Institute of Health).

The woman was infected, while the man’s case was still under investigation on Tuesday evening. Both are hospitalized in the infectious disease department of the Maggiore hospital. Her daughter was traveling with them, but she tested negative.

At the moment, Asugi reports, “there are no other passengers at risk who have arrived in Trieste”. It should be remembered that the two cases confirmed in recent weeks – a thirteen-year-old returning from a cruise and a man living in Via del Ronco returning from a trip to the Caribbean – were both discharged after a few days.

Disinfestation

As with the previous one in Via del Ronco, this time too localized disinfestation will take place to prevent the spread of the virus: it will be held on Wednesday 5 June, in the evening. The area involved in the operations covers a rather large perimeter, indicated by a special map released by the Municipality: the Chiarbola and Ponziana districts will be affected, as well as obviously a large stretch of Via Costalunga, where the couple resides.

The operation

The disinfestation will be divided into two different phases: it will start with a first larvicidal intervention at 7pm, followed by a second adulticidal intervention approximately starting from 9.30pm.

To carry out this last disinfestation, transit bans have been placed: in this case, the time slot goes from 9pm to midnight (or in any case until the end of the operations). During this period of time – and in any case only on the stretches of road included in the map – traffic will be closed via dell’Istria, via Fonte Oppia, via Costalunga, via Carnaro, via dei Caldana, via Frà Paolo Naldini, via Bazzarini, via delle Campanelle, via Coppo, via Nicoletto d’Alessio, via Rovigno, via Orsera and via Michele della Vedova.

The signs

In the area affected by the operations, starting from Wednesday morning, signs will be placed containing instructions for residents. The Municipality and Asugi reiterate the guidelines already strongly recommended for disinfestation last week: staying indoors with windows and doors tightly closed during operations, as well as suspending the operation of air exchange systems and keeping indoors pets, protecting plants exposed outdoors with plastic sheets and collecting fruit and vegetables from the gardens.

The recommendations

Once the disinfestation has been completed, the recommendation is to proceed, using gloves, to clean furniture, children’s toys and anything else left outside: remember that, in case of accidental contact with the insecticide product, it is advisable to wash thoroughly with water and soap.

Generally speaking, the Municipality asks the population to do everything possible, in the coming weeks, to avoid the formation of new larvae: therefore, empty containers or vases and position them appropriately so as to prevent the collection of stagnant water which favors mosquitoes. —
