Municipal theater L’Aquila, agreement signed: 5 million to complete the works

Agreement signed for the completion of the works on the municipal theater. Minister Sangiuliano’s commitment also for the San Filippo Theatre.

L’Aquila will have its municipal theater back. Signed this afternoon, in the presence of the Minister for Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, there “Agreement for the assignment of the activities for completing the seismic improvement works, systems and stage engineering of the ‘Nazzareno De Angelis’ municipal theater” of the regional capital, between the Regional Secretariat of the Ministry of Culture for Abruzzo, the Municipality of L’Aquila, the Special Office for the reconstruction of L’Aquila, in agreement with the Mission Structure of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.

An agreement that transfers responsibility for the rebirth process of theater of the Abruzzo capital, seriously damaged by the 2009 earthquakefrom the Secretariat for the cultural heritage of Abruzzo to Municipality of L’Aquila, as implementing entity together with Usra.

The State Regions conference, on May 2nd, approved the financing from 5 million eurosincluded within the scope of the Strategic Plan ‘Major cultural heritage projects’ promoted by Mic, aimed precisely at carrying out the interventions necessary to complete the works on the property owned by the municipal body, for a total of 14 million euros. The financing follows, in fact, that already provided for by the public reconstruction, equal to a total of 9 million euros, allocated through the 2009 Earthquake Structure.

The signing of the document came at the end of a well-attended meeting which took place in the municipal headquarters of Palazzo Margherita. In addition to Minister Sangiuliano, to the Mayor Biondito the regional secretary of the MIC for Abruzzo, Matteo Pisito the owner of the Special Office for the reconstruction of L’Aquila, Except Provenzanothe president of the Abruzzo Region was present, Marcus Marsiliothe representatives of the major cultural institutions of the city, administrators and mayors of the province of L’Aquila, personalities, while the president of the Teatro Stabile d’Abruzzo spoke remotely, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco. “L’Aquila is a city with infinite cultural potential, which owes its identity to the history and roots. A city wounded by the earthquake which, thanks to the synergy between the municipality, region and ministry, is rapidly being reborn. An autonomous and independent commission chose it as the Italian Capital of Culture 2026, and it was the demonstration of an organizational capacity and ideas that makes us confident for the future. For this reason the ministry will be close to the city: the municipal theater has already been financed with 5 million euros and now we will also resolve the problems of San Filippo very quickly, allowing the city to once again enjoy two theaters worthy of its history” declared the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano.

“With the assignment of the works to the Municipality of L’Aquila and the allocation of 5 million euros from the resources of the Ministry of Culture, we can finally start the second batch of works to complete the reconstruction of the municipal theatre, after a period of stall. The agreement allows us to give a concrete acceleration for the return to the community of one of the most awaited goods. I thank the Government and all the institutions involved for their precious team work and for yet another sign of attention and sensitivity towards a territory that has made culture the driving force behind every process of regeneration and development. This allows us to face the challenge of being the Italian Capital of Culture 2026 with serenity and great enthusiasm”, thus the mayor of L’Aquila, Pierluigi Biondi.
