The meeting of the National Doctorate in Space Science in L’Aquila

L’AQUILA – Students, members of the teaching board, supervisors, co-supervisors and representatives of the partner institutions of the National Doctorate in Space Science and Technology SST will be in L’Aquila from 6 to 8 June for the second edition of the PhD Days. During the workshop, which will be attended by more than one hundred people, industry experts will address various topics in space science and technology while doctoral students will discuss the results of their research projects.

«It is an event that we care a lot about – comments Professor Ivan De Mitri, of the GSSI, president of the organizing scientific committee – given our research activities in the space sector and given the opportunity that the doctoral students will have to discuss live, share their experiences and their projects.”

«It is in fact a strategic project for higher education in the space sector, which includes over thirty universities and research bodies in our country, with connections with universities, research bodies and agencies at an international level», underlines the national coordinator Roberto Battiston, professor at the University of Trento, administrative headquarters of the program, who organized the first edition of the Phd Days in July 2023.

The National Doctoral Program in Space Science and Technology was born during the academic year 2022-2023 with the thirty-eighth cycle and currently has approximately 75 students. The call for the fortieth cycle will be published in the coming weeks. It is divided into seven curricula ranging from Observation of the Universe to the Earth and the Sun-Earth system, Planetary Sciences, Astrobiology, Life Sciences and Space Medicine, Space Sensing and Instrumentation, Engineering and Technologies of Satellite Platforms, but also Economics, Jurisprudence and Space Diplomacy.

The 2024 edition of the National Days will be hosted in the Auditorium of the Gran Sasso Science Institute and the San Basilio hall of the University of L’Aquila and is organized by the GSSI and UnivAQ with the collaboration of the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of the INFN , Thales Alenia Space Italy and the Gran Sasso Tech Foundation. Interventions by institutional representatives and guests are planned, as well as the presentation of student posters: the two best, selected by a special commission, will be awarded a prize. An event open to the public is also planned, with a lecture held by Professor Battiston (former president of the Italian Space Agency) entitled “Space Exploration: reaching beyond the limits using bioinspired technologies” scheduled for Thursday 6 June at 7pm at the conference center “Zordan” in Piazza San Basilio. Also on the program are visits to the underground laboratories of Gran Sasso and the Thales Alenia Space headquarters in L’Aquila. Professors Roberto Alosio (GSSI) and Mauro Maccarrone and Mirko Piersanti (University of L’Aquila) are also part of the organizing scientific committee.
