The Municipality of Riva del Garda celebrated Republic Day on Sunday 2 June with the traditional concert of the city band directed by Mo. Mario Lutterotti.

This year the concert was preceded by the parade which started from the town hall, in Piazza Tre Novembre, at 5.30pm, and completed the journey to the Rocca. Another novelty: the municipal administration created a tricolor cockade which was given to all the administrators and municipal councilors present, to the members of the gang and to the local police officers, as well as to the four mayors present: Franco Odorizzi, Bruno Santi, Paolo Matteotti and Adalberto Mosaner.

In Rocca, after the Italian anthem performed by the band and before the concert, the speech of the deputy mayor, who read the speech prepared by the mayor, who at that moment was traveling from Rome where he represented Riva del Garda and the Trentino at the Republic Day military parade.

Dear citizens, civil and military authorities present, representatives of the associations,
today 2 June, Republic Day, is an extremely important day for our country: on 2 June 1946 the Italian people found themselves faced with the choice of deciding on a new form of government for Italy, it was entrusted to the Constituent Assembly task of writing the new Constitution, and I would like to underline this, for the first time Italian women went to vote. I am returning from Rome, this morning I had the honor of representing our city and Trentino at the military parade on the occasion of the celebration of the Republic Day which takes place every year in the capital. I paraded with the tricolor sash together with a representation of Italian mayors in front of the highest authorities of the State, a great emotion for me and a great honor for our city. Unfortunately, the distance did not allow me to be here with you this afternoon, but I wanted to leave you my message as I wanted to share this significant commemorative moment. The referendum was the first step towards the moral and material rebirth of our country, with the victory of the Republic the path was definitively traced towards a new political and social season, which will find in the Italian Constitution the foundation of those principles that still remain unchanged today their strength and their relevance. Various political souls were able to reach a difficult compromise within the Constituent Assembly, writing a constitutional charter in which the Italian Republic was the home of all. A new, open, free and vital nation, in which the values of democracy, freedom, respect and dignity of people were the foundations on which to unite intentions and overcome conflicts, in the name of the good of the Italian people. Let us remember that the main tool available to the people to influence the life and choices of their country is the vote, which is personal, free and secret. That vote which was granted to women for the first time in Italy on 2 June 1946 was an event of profound significance, the first step towards a modern and complete democracy and the opening of a hole on the path to gender equality which it’s still hard to reach. Republic Day reminds us, once again, that each of us must work for the common good, thus honoring our history and those who have suffered and sacrificed their lives in the name of the Italian people. Democracy is a delicate balance between personal aspirations and awareness of the centrality of people. The first part of the Constitution of the Italian Republic is entitled “Rights and duties of citizens” because alongside the rights there are also duties which citizens cannot fail to fulfill, they are the basis of civil coexistence and the prerequisite for the growth of a country .
Happy Republic Day!
