Turin remembers the tragedy of Piazza San Carlo in 2017

TURIN, 03 JUN – The notes of Silence played by a municipal police officer and the laying of a wreath in front of the commemorative plaque. This is how Turin remembered this morning the tragedy in Piazza San Carlo where, on the evening of 3 June 2017 during the Champions League final between Juventus and Real Madrid, almost 1,600 people were injured in the crowd, due to the panic triggered by the use of spray stinging by a group of young people. A madness that also caused the death of two women, Erika Pioletti and Marisa Amato, who died from their wounds. At the ceremony, in addition to the authorities, such as the mayor Stefano Lo Russo and the former first citizen Chiara Appendino, also the family of Marisa Amato, who a few years ago created the non-profit organization ‘The dreams of grandmother Marisa’. “It was my mother who wanted it to be established – remembers her daughter, Viviana d’Ingeo – to draw something positive from a tragedy. We move forward with difficulty, because there is a lot of bureaucracy, but we continue to do what we can thanks to those who supports us. There are projects, even large and demanding ones, but we put all of ourselves into them.” Among these, he says, “support for treatment for those who cannot afford it and the donation of means of transport for disabled people, two so far and we are planning to donate the third. My mother always had a smile, her nature was to give herself to people and always be available for everyone. Today – he concludes – we are here so as not to forget and we hope that what happened, and which should not have happened, never happens again”.
