PISA. Someone hours of chaos at Galileo Galiei airport of Pisa with passengers crowded together in the boarding area due to delays caused by the wave of bad weather that affected the province yesterday. Lots of lightning struck in the afternoon, together with a strong storm which, in fact, brought the airport to zero operations. As, four flights arriving they were in San Giusto diverted to Rome Fiumicino. But many others have been put on standby waiting for the airport to return to full capacity.
The rain that fell was copious. So much so that, in the entrance area for arrivals, where the refreshment points are located, there were also leaks from the roof which created quite a few inconveniences for the staff and people present at the time.
Delayed and diverted flights
But the biggest problems were faced by passengers on flights to Pisa or departing from Galilei. Ryanair planes departing from East Midland, Bari, Catania and Skiathos were diverted to Fiumicino. Those scheduled to land from 2.30pm onwards suffered heavy delays. Some last an hour or less, others even three or four hours.
And the result was a mass of people in the boarding area with families and elderly people piled between the seats and the narrow corridors in front of the gates. And everyone with their eyes on the scoreboards to understand how a situation characterized by the strong discomfort of having to wait a long time in an environment small enough to contain the simultaneous presence of hundreds of people would evolve.
An inevitable context, considering the heavy rain that fell in a few hours and the high number of lightning strikes. Fortunately, however, in the late afternoon the bad weather stopped and little by little the flight situation returned to normal.
