TOASTS – Motorcycle-car collision along the state road 379 Bari-Brindisi at the junction for Pantanagianni, in the Carovigno area, heading south. A 33-year-old motorcyclist, resident in Acquaviva delle Fonti, is hospitalized in very serious conditions at the Perrino hospital in Brindisi. The clinical picture is considered very serious. According to a first summary reconstruction, still being verified, it seems that the small car driven by an elderly man took the main road in the wrong direction and hit the motorbike. But the checks by the Brindisi traffic police, who are entrusted with the investigations, are still ongoing.
The impact was very violent. The motorcyclist was thrown from the saddle, ending up on the asphalt: both the motorbike and the small car were engulfed in flames. “Ghostly images – says those who intervened to put out the flames – The motorbike was reduced to a pile of scrap metal and the motorcyclist was in bad shape”. The southbound road was closed to traffic at Egnazia and Terme di Torre Canne at kilometer 30. Traffic was temporarily diverted onto the coplanar road. Many passing motorists stopped to help. The fire caused a column of black smoke visible from several dozen kilometers away.
In addition to the 118 operators and firefighters from the Ostuni detachment, traffic police officers and Anas personnel also arrived. The motorcyclist, as mentioned, was taken to hospital under code red and admitted to intensive care. The driver of the car suffered only minor injuries, but was nevertheless taken to hospital as a precaution. The vehicles, at the disposal of the Brindisi Prosecutor’s Office, were seized. The road was reopened to traffic a few minutes before midday.
