The final event of the adaptation process of the Advanced Medical Post with Surgery of the volunteer organization GCU-Emergency Surgery Group for Civil Protection interventions took place this morning in Florence, in the Aula Magna of the Meyer Health Campus , which is part of the regional mobile civil protection column.

The meeting was attended by the President of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani, the Head of the Civil Protection Department, Fabrizio Curcio, the Director of the ERCC-Emergency Response Coordination Centre of the Directorate General for Civil Protection and European Humanitarian Aid Operations (DGECHO) of the European Commission, Michela Matuella, the regional councilor for the environment and civil protection, Monia Monni, the regional councilor for the right to health and healthcare , Simone Bezzini, the director of the Volunteering and Resources Office of the National Service of the Department, Sisto Russo, the director of the Civil Protection of the Tuscany Region, Giovanni Massini, the regional health representative, Piero Paolini, the President of the GCU, Federico Filidei and the civil protection official of the Tuscany region, Alessia Mugnai Poggesi.

The objective of this European project is the classification of the healthcare module as EMT-Emergency Medical Team Type 2 according to the international standards set by the World Health Organization and recognized by the European Commission, a certification that will allow Italy to equip itself with a field hospital to be used in the event of disasters even in international contexts.

Once the certification has been obtained, the structure can be registered in the ECCP-European Civil Protection Pool which includes the resources pre-committed by the States of the Union Civil Protection Mechanism to be deployed immediately in case of emergency.

The “EMT2 Toscana” project was born in 2022 from the partnership between the Department of Civil Protection, the Tuscany Region and the GCU in response to the call from the Directorate General for Civil Protection and European Humanitarian Aid Operations. The cost of the adaptation was financed 75% by the European Union and the remaining 25% by the Department and the Tuscany Region and the implementation path covered three areas: staff recruitment, training, equipment provision necessary.

In case of activation, the hospital can be promptly deployed in various emergency contexts and will be able to assist more than 100 people a day with a 24-hour operational capacity, employing around 60 professionals including doctors, nurses and volunteer logisticians from the regional civil protection system as well as staff of the Civil Protection of the Tuscany Region and of the Department.
