Messina: the Christian Workers Movement remembered the victims of the Capaci massacre

“Capable of Growing, Community and Legality” this is the theme chosen to renew the event which every year, the day before the anniversary of the Capaci massacre in which Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo and the men of the escort lost their lives, sees the MCL of Messina gather around the olive tree planted in 2017, symbol of the commitment “For Development against the Mafia”.

The Christian Workers Movement has returned to the Scalinata Rosa Donato in via XXIV Maggio with the initiative promoted by the Bene Foundation with the patronage of the Giovanni Falcone Foundation which adds to the other “stages” in which, throughout the country, discussion and reflections are promoted among young people on strategies and actions to combat the Mafia.

The initiative organized by the young volunteers of MCL Messina saw the participation of Maria Francesca Pricoco, President of the Juvenile Court, together with the children of the “Boer-Verona Trento” and “Liceo Scientifico Seguenza” institutes. The staircase was transformed into an open-air laboratory of legality, where posters, poems and reflections on the themes of responsible communities and legality were shared.

Fortunato Romano, President of MCL Messina, underlined the importance of fighting the new mafias by relying on development “which for the MCL is a central issue for the fight against the mafias. We are convinced that working to build development, to build employment and work, together with culture and school are the antidotes to fight them.”

President Pricoco opened the dialogue with the young students: “The memory of the Capaci massacre arouses emotion and sharing in the fight against the mafias, promoting community life in respect of the fundamental rights of the human person, as indicated by our Constitution and the Convention UN on children’s rights. We hope that through the commitment of the new generations, hope can be cultivated in the change to which magistrates like Falcone and Borsellino have dedicated their justice function”.

Elisa Furnari, President of the Bene Foundation, intervened highlighting how legality must be built every day because “it is something that is built every day and therefore the hope is that you remember that you are indispensable to fight the mafias. Listening to you reminds us that we still have something to learn.”

At the end of the day the kids donated both an anti-mafia awareness t-shirt to the President of the Juvenile Court and “Legality bookmarks” to all those present in memory of the event.
