Photovoltaic, triple jump in Piacenza: plants above ten thousand

In the 2013 photovoltaic systems registered in Piacenza and its province were 3,589.
As of December 31st 2023, according to data provided by GSE and Terna, there were 10,205, triple.
Precisely 2023 was the year of records, with 2,450 new installationsequal to more 41 Megawatts.
The overall power of the photovoltaic present in our territory has thus risen to 260 MW, 0.9% of the national one.

National data

At 31 December 2023 they were in operation in Italy 1,597,447 photovoltaic systemsfor a total power equal to 30,319 MW.
The systems with a power lower than or equal to 20 kW constitute 94% of the total in terms of number and 29% in terms of power; the average size of the systems is equal to 19 kW.
During 2023 they entered into operation on the national territory 371,442 plants photovoltaic systems – the vast majority of which are less than 20 kW – for a total power of 5,209 MW2; over 21% of the power installed in 2023 is made up of plants larger than 1 MW.
The number of plants that entered into operation during 2023 is significantly higher than that recorded in 2022 (+77%), as is the installed power (+109%).

The division by regions

At the end of 2023, the only ones Lombardy and Veneto concentrated 30.9% of the plants on the national territory (with 264,823 and 228,013 plants respectively). The regions with numerically higher values are Lombardy (17.5%), Veneto (13.2%), Emilia-Romagna (9.8%) and Sicily (6.9%).
The national record in terms of installed power is in Lombardy (4.05 GW), followed by Puglia (3.31 GW), a region that until 2021 held the largest share of photovoltaic capacity. The lowest values, however, are in Basilicata, Molise, Valle d’Aosta and in the Province of Bolzano.
The power in operation in Italy at the end of 2023 was concentrated for 48.0% in the northern regions of the country, 34.7% in the southern ones, and the remaining 17.3% in the central ones. In terms of contribution to overall national power, the highest is found in Lombardy (13.4%), followed by Puglia (10.9%), Veneto (10.4%) and Emilia-Romagna (10.0%) .

The numbers of the provinces

At provincial level, the distribution of overall plants in operation at the end of 2023 was rather heterogeneous. Rome confirms itself as the first Italian province for the number of photovoltaic systems in operation, with 3.9% of the national total; they follow Brescia (3.5%) e Treviso (3.1%).
Among the southern provinces, however, the largest share of new plants is concentrated in Bari it’s at Lecce (both 1.8%).
In terms of contribution to the national photovoltaic power, Brescia obtains the record (2.9% of the total) surpassing Lecce (2.7% of the total) for the first year; followed by Cuneo (2.5%) and Turin (2.3%).
The provinces of Viterbo and Rome together constitute 4.3% of the national power, as well as 25% of the total power of Central Italy.

On the ground or on the roof?

The historical trend of installed power in operation compared to the location of the system on the ground or on buildings, greenhouses or shelters is divided into two distinct phases.
«In the years between 2009 and 2013, i.e. in the phase of expansion of photovoltaics supported by incentives in the Energy Account – explains the report – there was a sustained growth in the percentage of power associated with ground systems; this dynamic reached its peak at the end of 2011, equaling the share of power associated with installations not placed on the ground”.

In the years following 2013, the pace of installations decreased for both types of installations, but more evidently for ground-based ones, whose impact on the total has therefore progressively reduced.

At the end of 2023, the photovoltaic power installed on the ground amounted to 9,181 MW (+9.2% compared to 2022), equal to 30% of the overall national figure; the 20,992 MW of installed power not on land (+26.2% compared to 2022) represent 69% of the national total. In recent years, the first plants have finally come into operation agrivoltaics And floating, for a total power of 147 MW.
