Giro 107 goes to the archives with some twists at the end. The Rome stop was supposed to be the classic catwalk for Pogacar, winner, or rather dominator, of this Giro d’Italia, but gave moments of tension in the finish area. See the fall of Storer which risked its place in the top 10 of the ranking, see the puncture of Jonathan Milan who was moments away from the final sprint. Helped a little by Visma Lease a Bike, a little by Soudal Quick Step – Milan’s opposing teams with a sprint in mind – the Friulian still managed to return with the aim of hitting the poker in this Giro. In the sprint, however, there was no story with the victory of Merlier which evened the score with Milan, winning its third hurrah after the victories in Fossano and Padova. Miracle missed by the leader of the Lidl Trek who consoles himself with the cyclamen sweater for the victory in the points classification, mathematically achieved already in Sappada. Raise the Endless trophy Pogacar who also achieved success in the climbers’ classification: since 2018, whoever won the Giro had not also won the climbers’ classification (Froome). Then all the other winners: Tiberi (best young person), Pietrobon (ranking of flying finishes and breakaways), Fiorelli (inter-lap ranking), Alaphilippe (Superfighter) and the Decathlon AG2R The World (team ranking).
