The test was certainly tense from the start (given that the last points needed to qualify for the Paris Olympics were up for grabs), both due to the difficult weather conditions (the start was postponed by half an hour due to high tide).
After the forced withdrawal of Gianluca Pozza, struck by a virus a few hours before the start, three Italians showed up at the start: Nicola Azzano, Michele Sarzilla and Alessio Crociani, who placed 25th and 27th respectively. and 39th place.
«There was no lack of stress due to the postponement of the start and given that it was the last race before the end of the Olympic qualifications. I have always tried to have courage and face difficulties to finish the race in the best possible way to reward the work in recent years: towards myself, the people who worked with me, the Federation, which has always supported me, and for give a signal that despite difficulties we must always give our best. A very hard journey ends and I am proud of how I faced it”, commented Sarzilla.
A very tough competition for Azzano too: «I have to say that today would have been tough in any case, then with the weather warning it was difficult to regain concentration. I didn’t swim at my best, but cycling and running went quite well, but I’m proud of my performance and it was wonderful to compete in Italy.”
