Intermodal Marine Terminal of Messina is preparing to double car traffic

Naples – The Intermodal Marine Terminal of Genoa, part of the Ignazio Messina & C. group), is preparing to double its automotive traffic, going from the current 50 thousand vehicles to a total of 100 thousand thanks to the signature – which it hopes to obtain in these days – of a new contract for the movement of Volkswagen and Toyota destined for Northern Europe.

Speaking about the new agreement during the 3rd SHIPPING ITALY Business Meeting dedicated to ships and ferry terminals, Ignazio Messina, CEO of the company, explained how and why the Messina group intends to focus on this segment in the Ligurian port of activity – one of several in the heterogeneous ro-ro sector in which it is active – challenging the dominance of the port of Livorno in Italy.

Compared to container traffic, Messina explained, “our terminal suffers from limitations linked to its proximity to the airport. We have managed to have 6,000 TEU ships arrive: now we receive them but we cannot grow further”. Hence the choice, so far profitable, to develop the new car traffic segment, also offering complementary activities. “Certain container companies can no longer come to us, but on ro-ros we can give greater added value” he added, explaining how IMT is now aiming to manage the land logistics of new cars, with the aim of “developing trains, also mixed cars and containers”, as well as additional activities in the yard.
