Fabrizio Barca in La Spezia to talk about Europe

The Mediterranean Cultural Association, the Circolo Pertini and Legambiente La Spezia conclude the series of meetings entitled “For social and environmental justice” with the initiative which will be held on Monday 27 May at 9pm in La Spezia – Circolo ARCI Canaletto, via Bosco 2 : Fabrizio Barca, co-coordinator of the Inequalities and Diversity Forum will present the book “Which Europe” and the proposals of the Inequalities and Diversity Forum to design a Europe of social and environmental justice.

“In a few days the polls will open to elect the new European Parliament – we read in the press note -. The wind of nationalism and the widespread resistance to believing and fighting for a real alternative in almost all member countries of the European Union are leading to short-lived proposals, timid in addressing the challenges of the double transition, digital and ecological; ambiguous, at best, towards migrants; inadequate to counteract the new world disorder, wars and also the many social injustices. The path to take is not that of indifference or opposition to the EU. The European Union can be a precious resource for the destinies of the world, even more so in this phase of growing global disorder and growing risks for peace. However, there is no need for just any “Union”. Three different ideas of Europe are challenging each other today, and will continue to challenge each other after the elections: the one that has governed the last five years, which, despite making progress in the digital, environmental and autonomous investment fields, remains profoundly marked by neoliberal culture; the conservative-authoritarian one, which tries to combine neoliberalism with nationalism and corporatism, playing “social” against “environmental”, “us” against “them”; and, then, a third idea, that of a Europe of social and environmental justice and peace”.

“The latter – concludes the document – is the aspiration of the ForumDD, shared by the three associations promoting the initiative in La Spezia. The presentation of the book is the offer of some features of the European Union that would serve social and environmental justice, an informative and comparative contribution, a yardstick for judging – before and after the elections – programs, parties, candidates and elected officials, a compass for the civic monitoring of the actions that the Union will carry out in the next legislature”.
