Unieuro’s sporting season ends at 10.05pm on Friday 24 May, having also been defeated by Trieste in game 3 of the playoff semi-final. An unforgettable year in some ways (victory of the Italian Cup) which however at the moment is feeling the bitterness of this clear elimination. Unieuro fought back, but once again had to surrender to a fitter and healthier team, despite the absence of Reyes last night. Trieste was once again supported by great three-point percentages (41% after 4/14 in the middle of the match): Forlì lost a series in which it was actually never in the game and in which it never had a balanced performance from of his men. Yesterday the ‘Americans’ were the usual Zampini and Cinciarini. And Johnson? Insignificant or almost. In this way and without Allen, with this Trieste it could only end like this.

In the 1st quarter Forlì played on equal terms, even finding their second lead of the entire series at 10-11 after an invention by Cinciarini in the 8th minute. But the joy of Forlì does not last long. In fact, the home team with Brooks scoring 11 points in 10′ went on an 11-0 run which at the start of the second half took them ahead 21-11.

Johnson continues to have flashes (few), but the Forlì attack with Cinciarini (11 points in 11′ in the first half) and Zampini (12 in 14′) prevent Trieste from extending their lead. Forlì slips to -10 twice (36-26 after 17′ and 42-32 after 19′), but holds up by attacking the area more, thus rebalancing the free throw count in some way (zero in the 1st quarter, 12 in the 2nd). The Giulians didn’t suffer too much from Reyes’ absence thanks to Candussi’s 12 points and 10 rebounds and Brooks’ 16. And above all they open the second half in style with a run of 14-5 which after 5’25” and three bombs in a row – Ferrero, Ruzzier and Menalo – brings the score to 56-39. The advantage also reaches +18 but Forlì tries to come back with a 1-8 in 1’30” for -11 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

However, the race seems to be sealed. And in fact in the fourth period the protagonist becomes Ariel Filloy, who scores 12 points with three bombs. Yet, thanks to Cinciarini and Zampini, Forlì is still at -8 (his triple of 74-66 at -5 ‘). It’s the last glow: Trieste scores a 7-0 lead for 81-66 at -4’ which closes everything. Martino applauds his veterans and takes them away in the final minutes. Right so. But how much bitterness.
