On Friday 31 May 2024, at 6 pm, the exhibition will be inaugurated in Genoa, at the SHAREVOLUTION – contemporary art gallery by Chiara Pinardi (Palazzo Andrea Doria, Piazza San Matteo, 17). INTRAMEDIA WORKS – Photographic art and Videoperformances by the La Spezia artist Giuliano Sturli (1944).
The artist, already active and present in the city of Genoa – we remember, among others, the exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Villa Croce, simultaneously with the exhibition at the Galleria Leonardi V-idea in 2003 – presents in this exhibition a series of photographic works and some Videoperformances presented in Rome in 2019 at the MACRO Museum of Contemporary Art and in 2023 at the MAXXI Museum as part of the Territori della Performance exhibition.
The exhibition at SHAREVOLUTION ca proposes, through works that cover a time span from the end of the Seventies to the present day, a new vision of the artist’s media art once again present in the city of Genoa.
In Giuliano Sturli’s artistic career the reference to immateriality remains constant, to be understood conceptually as the ongoing dematerialisation of reality, through the increasingly widespread mass media communication. Hence the multipurpose use of media: with video he creates works that combine performativity and installation in a single language.
After the behavioral research of the early Seventies, he began to use photography as an active testimony of each operation. In the series of works entitled Photo events the image taken from posters and fashionable magazines, often a portrait of a woman, is manipulated or corroded by chemical dissolves, material elements such as stones or earth, combustion, and during the transformative event a unique and unrepeatable photograph is taken. In fact, photography is used by the artist in two stages, since it is the intervention on the initial photo that creates the definitive photograph.
In the large format photographic images created in the second half of the 1980s, the objects, presented in real size, are transformed into metaphorical language. The artist places us in front of a descriptive image, a fixed narrative, as in a sort of still life.
Always taking images of everyday reality, he creates the series Photo silhouette for a new adventure in the territory of media art.
The definition of a conceptual space remains the most original element in the author’s operational process. This conceptual definition of space is linked to the direct intervention on photography.
As in the case of the Fotoeventi and Photoplasmas present in the exhibition, projections of faces on folded paper, all the interventions have in common the desire to give the definitive image a memory,
the memory of gestures and the operational process. The conceptual space is to be understood precisely as the memory space of each image.
The exhibition represents a unique opportunity to grasp the originality of Giuliano Sturli who, with his research, was able to give shape to a vision of reality, personal as it is the fruit of his experience and sensitivity but, at the same time, universal as always rooted in contemporaneity.
The exhibition will remain until Saturday 7 September 2024 and can be visited from Wednesday to Saturday, from 4pm to 7pm and on other days by appointment (338 3027883).
