The Campada of the Palestine Siena Committee ended yesterday evening after 10 days. Motion rejected but which asked for the establishment of observatories on the cooperation programs that the University has with Israeli universities or with industries in the war supply chain. Instead, a commission was established to study and evaluate the agreements in a transparent manner.

The Acampada of the Palestine Siena Committee ended yesterday evening after 10 days which, after starting at the entrance to the Mattioli Campus of the University of Siena, had moved inside the Rectorate in the last two days. Tents, mattresses and banners reading ‘Occupied Rectorate’ and ‘Student Intifada’ were taken away by around thirty students at the end of the meeting of the Academic Senate which discussed a motion proposed by the Committee. Motion rejected but which asked for the establishment of observatories on the cooperation programs that the University has with Israeli universities or with industries in the war supply chain. Instead, a commission was established to study and evaluate the agreements in a transparent manner. “The rector Roberto Di Pietra has suggested a Senate commission that will take care of drawing up all the agreements that the University has at the moment, a way to guarantee transparency and accessibility to all the agreements currently in force” explained Francesca Pagni of the Palestine Committee Siena.

in Florence, however, the motion was approved, after some modifications, today unanimously by the Academic Senate, and was presented by students and staff of the University of Florence, together with student representatives from other universities and institutes, such as the Normale di Pisa, which also has an office in the Tuscan capital, or the European University Institute of Fiesole.

The approval of the motion was encouraged by a noisy garrison under the rector’s office in Piazza San Marco, which ‘accompanied’ the meeting of the Academic Senate throughout the morning. But what does the motion ask for? Call for an immediate ceasefire and condemn the bombings of schools, universities, hospitals and places of worship in Palestine and the invasion of Rafah, in addition to the commitment, according to what has been learned, for the rector Petrucci to bring this position to the University of Florence at the Conference of Rectors of Italian Universities (Crui) scheduled for 23 May in Rome.

All this together with the guarantee of the creation of a working table for the creation of an ethical evaluation commission on the agreements made by the Florentine University with Israeli universities and companies in some way connected to the conflict in Palestine.
