Lupo: a new law from the VdA Region to compensate for damagesthe. A new law on damage from wildlife and related prevention measures is being studied to give greater support to farmers, also awaiting the conclusion of the European Union process for the downgrading of the status of the wolf from “strictly protected” species to “protected”.

This is what emerged in the Regional Council from the response of the Regional Councilor for Agriculture Marco Carrelresponding to a question from the League councilor Christian Ganis.

The reassurances

«Farmers can resort to protection measures, including combined ones (electrified fences, acoustic and luminous deterrents, guardian dogs, anti-wolf collars equipped with ultrasound and very intense LED lights), which fall within those provided for by resolution 1407/2021 which recognizes a regional contribution of 90% for a maximum allowable expenditure of 2 thousand euros” recalled Carrel.

The issue is also addressed by the recent regional wildlife plan. «Particular attention was given to the need to promote specific local protocols that contain the criteria and objectives to promptly manage, at a local level, the critical issues linked to the presence of the predator, in order to ensure the coexistence of the wolf with agricultural activities -pastoral – continued the councilor –. Finally, we are working, in concert with the other Regions, to try to reactivate the process to have the national wolf management plan definitively approved, which has been on hold for too long now.”

The reply

According to councilor Ganis «the prevention measures for which 70 thousand euros had been allocated have not had the desired effects. To date, the number of animals for which a compensation request has been submitted is 66 but there is no real data on the actual depredations. The prevention measures, although to be updated, are palliatives: the farmers ask to be able to carry out their work in complete serenity by returning to the stables in September with all the animals and not just the remaining ones”.
