The history and architecture of the civic tower are at the center of the guided tour “La Ghirlandina, symbol of Modena: a unique bell tower in the world” which takes place on Saturday 25 May at 7pm.

The visit, open to a maximum of 25 people, is organized by the Ars/Archeosistemi cooperative with the City Promotion and Tourism service of the Municipality of Modena. To participate you must book on the VisitModena website (www.visitmodena.it/it/esperienze/esperienze-artecultura/visite-tematiche-alla-torre-ghirlandina-2024). Participants will meet at the Ghirlandina ticket office, in via Lanfranco, at 6.45pm to pay the entrance ticket. the visit will start at 6pm from Piazza Torre and will last approximately 45 minutes.

The Ghirlandina, 89 meters high, was built in the Middle Ages as the bell tower of the Cathedral but since its origins it has also had an important civic function. During the guided climb, participants will be able to delve deeper into the origin of its name, the history of its construction and the architects and sculptors who designed it and worked on it, the architecture which, combining Romanesque and Gothic elements, makes it unique. A particular focus will be dedicated to the causes of the tower’s slope and to the computerized monitoring, located in the scientific instrument room, which keeps it under control.

Tickets for the guided tour can be paid directly at the Tower ticket office on the same day of the visit. Entrance to the Tower costs 3 euros; reduced price 2 euros (for children and students aged 6 to 26, over 65s and groups of at least 10 people); free for children up to 5 years old, for people with disabilities and their companions, guides and interpreters, teachers accompanying classes.
