Creating a new bus terminal equipped with all the latest generation technologies and capable of accommodating the new fleet of vehicles designed from a green perspective, while safeguarding the needs of passengers who use local public transport every day: these are the assumptions that drove the Sardinia Region to establish, with a specific resolution, the temporary free loan transfer of an area to the Municipality of Cagliari to be used for these purposes.

In fact, the CTM recently announced the conversion of its fleet of vehicles, with the aim of reaching an 80% share of electric buses by 2026. A 108 million PNRR tender is available to the organization which will transform the local public transport of the Sardinian capital into one of the most eco-sustainable in Italy. To reach this target it was necessary to create a new terminus equipped with a sufficient number of charging stations, an infrastructural system not compatible with Piazza Matteotti.

Given the need to find a new area that was close to the city center and easily accessible by users, a surface was identified in the spaces of the nearby RFI station, which however requires extensive urban redevelopment works. It was therefore essential to proceed with an intermediate step towards the construction of the terminus equipped with electric columns in another area. The Regional Council, having listened to and shared the proposal of the Councilor for Local Authorities, Finance and Urban Planning and having consulted the technical opinion of the Councilor for Transport, decided on the assignment in favor of the Municipality of Cagliari, on free loan for the duration of of ten years (possibly renewable), of the area currently used as a public car park located between via Riva di Ponente and viale La Plaia. The identified area is located, among other things, very close to the new student house in Viale La Plaia, an aspect that will greatly facilitate the students of the University of Cagliari in their daily movements.

“With this resolution, the Autonomous Region of Sardinia allows the Municipality of Cagliari and the CTM to carry out the major ecological renewal project of the current vehicle fleet without any problems and without increasing costs” observes Transport Councilor Barbara Manca. “The area, of considerable importance for Cagliari, can later be converted for other uses once the terminal has been moved” continues the Councilor for Local Authorities, Francesco Spanedda.

“This act is a clear demonstration of how virtuous collaboration between public bodies can bring real benefits to the lives of citizens – conclude the two members of the Regional Council -. With a dutiful and necessary, but not obvious, act, we have put Cagliari and the other interested municipalities in a position to continue the planning process, avoiding seeing important community resources lost”.
