COSENZA – 32 years after the Capaci and Via D’Amelio massacre, on the occasion of Legality Day which is celebrated today – 23 May – the mayor of Cosenza wanted to remember “with emotion the judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, Francesca Morvillo and the men of theirs stocks” reiterating “a never-failing commitment to combating all forms of illegality, abuse and oppression”.

“I consider it a duty to remember all the victims of the mafia, the women and statesmen, and among them Sergio Cosmai – continues the mayor – barbarically murdered in our city, who paid with their lives for their battle against organized crime. The memory of their sacrifice is in fact an example to be passed on to the new generations which can also act as an antidote against all oppression and violence”.

Mayors and administrators in the crosshairs, the Amantea case

“We must all still feel like we are in the trenches in defense of the values of legality – continues the mayor – also because in our region and in our province we have been witnessing, for some time now, a renewed attack on mayors and local administrators who carry out acts and actions to combat illicit practices and conduct. In this escalation of attacks and cowardly gestures, which I strongly condemn, the latest is the one perpetrated against the municipal councilor of Amanteadelegate for major events and urban decoration, architect Sergio Campanella whose car was set on fire in recent days by unknown persons. I express closeness and institutional and personal solidarity to councilor Campanella, believing, however, that in addition to expressions of solidarity, although important, a mobilization of all the institutions must be initiated to counter a situation that has now become incandescent”.

“On the other hand – concludes Franz Caruso – We Mayors are the institutional representatives closest to citizens and their needs, also left alone in facing and attempting to resolve the problems of our communities, which often speak, especially in our latitudes, the clear language of social and economic hardship. This is why it is urgent to identify, together, initiatives and actions capable of countering this resurgence of intimidating acts. Organized crime, it is clear, is raising its game, he resumed to threaten the institutions and it must be stopped.”
