Lazio Region: no to nuclear waste storage depot in Viterbo

The Lazio Regional Council has unanimously approved a motion against the hypothesis of a storage area in Tuscia

The Lazio Regional Council has unanimously approved a motion against the idea of creating a national repository for the storage of nuclear waste in Tuscia.

“The land is not an inheritance received from our fathers but a loan to be returned to our children”, writes the president of the Lazio Region Francesco Rocca on Facebook. “It is in this spirit that our commitment continues to say no to the creation of a national radioactive waste storage depot in Tuscia – underlines Rocca -. After years of silence on the topic, at the end of March I decided to appeal to the Lazio Regional Administrative Court, and today (yesterday ed.) the Lazio Regional Council unanimously approved a motion presented by Fratelli d’Italia councilors Daniele Sabatini and Giulio Zelli, which strengthens this line. Another act to defend the integrity of a territory that we will defend in every location, beyond any division and political affiliation”, concludes Rocca.

The motion was also signed by the vice president of the Regional Council Enrico Panunzi. “We add another fundamental piece to support the clear opposition to the national deposit of radioactive waste in the province of Viterbo – states the representative of the Democratic Party -. Already in 2021, as soon as the National Charter of Potentially Suitable Areas (Cnapi) for depositing nuclear waste from Sogin was published, of which 21 areas out of 51 were identified precisely in the Viterbo area, I immediately promoted an agenda, approved at ‘unanimity from the Regional Council, with which I committed the President and the Council to draw up observations to prevent those in the Lazio territory from being identified as suitable areas’.
