The Giancarlo Vitali Museum is born in Bellano on Lake Como

It’s called i Glories of paintingthe entire page in the Corriere della Sera written by Giovanni Testori which in 1983 marked a turning point in the artistic career of Giancarlo Vitali (1929 – 2018), for whom the critic and journalist curated the first personal exhibition in Milan in 1985. Proudly and obstinately “local”, Vitali chose Bellano, on the eastern shore of Lake Como, his birthplace, as the main subject of his figurative poetics. from 29 November 2024will host a Lorla Palace the museum dedicated to him. “The antibodies matured within his land, following nothing other than his own vocation, allow him an ethical disenchantment with the contradictions of today’s man”, writes architect Mario Botta on Vitali, on the occasion of the announcement of the future opening.

With over 100 works among drawings, paintings and engravings belonging to 70 years of activity – donated by the Vitali family to the Municipality of Bellano and to the ArchiViVitali ETS Association, which brings together the artist’s archives –, the Giancarlo Vitali Museum was created with the aim of presenting the work of the master engraver and painter in a renewed light, as well as to offer a place where new generations of artists can meet past ones. In fact, the exhibitions that will be presented in the historic residence of Palazzo Lorla will not only focus on Vitali, but will include other artists of his time and also the most emerging research: “Devoted to experimentation but rooted in the territory, the Museum presents itself as a dynamic space, where Vitali’s lesson is intertwined with the experiences of the new generations, and where the encounter between past memory and future vision activates virtuous connections”, they say from the museum.

The Giancarlo Vitali Museum and the activity of BAC – Bellano Arte Cultura

The soon-to-open museum is part of the broader cultural valorization project of Bellano which is gathered around the acronym BAC – Bellano Arte Cultura and includes an itinerary (one kilometer and 200 metres) that goes from the historical and naturalistic monuments to the exhibition spaces. Among these, the natural glacial gorge ofHorridthe church of Santa Marta which hosts the Lamentation over the dead Christ – an imposing group of 8 polychrome wooden statues created by Giovanni Angelo Del Maino between the end of the fifteenth century and the beginning of the sixteenth century – and the space Saint Nicholaswhich together with the new center that will be built within the structure of the historic Cantoni Cotonificio will be dedicated to contemporary art.
