photographs by Luigi Ghirri at MAUTO in Turin

Openness to art is just one of the innovations that the new management of the MAUTO – Turin Automobile Museum, under the guidance of Lorenza Bravetta, has contributed to the mandate of caring for the culture of the automobile, while enhancing its relationship with other languages. The new and intense soul of the Museum immediately emerges, perceptible from the entrance, starting from the elimination of the turnstiles to favor a vision that brings to mind the idea of a “square”. The history and prestige of the oldest automobile museum in the world – which reached a record number of visitors in the last week of April – are strengthened by a new open vision of the museum, which becomes a place of sharing and discovery for every age. The master’s exhibition Luigi Ghirri is a contribution to this interdisciplinary vision, offering the public 50 shots dating back to the second half of the 1980s, coming from the Ghirri Archive and the Jacobacci & Partners corporate collection.

The new Project Room space, which acts as a counterpart to the main room now dedicated to the exhibition of the anniversary of the death of Ayrton Senna, offers a selection of photographs with a documentary principle, with the main object being the Ferrari manufacturing in Maranello: the work in the factory, the designers, the production and assembly chains, the leather processing. Furthermore, the exhibition is enriched by exceptional photographs dating back to 1988 of the Forte di Belvedere in Florence with the installation of Pierluigi Cerri and the series dedicated to a scale replica of the Ferrari F40 with a golf course as a backdrop.

«A story in which the small size of a photograph has the power to preserve all the depth of a story», combined with the presence of the iconic 1990 Ferrari F40 on loan from the Gino Macaluso Foundation for Historic Cars and a body in fiberglass of the F40 Junior of the same year from the Autosalone Ferrari Srl collection. All in a dimension that recalls and seems to duplicate the space of the production lines, as visible from the photograph positioned on the front wall at the entrance.

And so the exhibition finds its rightful place in the dynamism and energy that can be felt at MAUTO, including the desire to enhance important collaborations such as the one with the Venaria Reale Restoration Centre. This latest collaboration will be the subject of an initiative that in large international museums creates strong public appreciation: the possibility of following the restoration of cars live through a dedicated space near the exhibition space, the Project Room and the entrance. .

Furthermore, the Project Room’s programming includes a cycle of exhibitions, as during Artissima, in which the selected artists will be asked to express themselves on themes related to the automobile, to encourage the union between contemporary creativity and new technologies. The new program also includes a series of talks and appointments, including the one on May 23rd at 6.30 pm, The Ferrari F40 and photographs by Luigi Ghirriunderlining the commonality between the transformation processes that characterize the automobile and photography, with Francesco Zanotcurator, essayist and photography historian, e Monica ZanettiMaranello’s first mechanic.
