Campi Flegrei, the mayor of Pozzuoli, was shocked by the failure to approve the earthquake bonus: «If it was given to others, why not to us?»

After the numerous tremors, the mayor of Pozzuoli Luigi Manzoni tries to reassure the population, in a panic with many people who have poured into the streets, in some cases even choosing to sleep in their cars. “It is not an easy situation, the greatest criticality is due to the concern of the population”, declared the mayor at the press conference. When asked about the fear of the population who doesn’t know what to do, he declares: «Evacuation simulations were scheduled on May 30th and 31st. Now, alas, we are facing a de facto emergency. If the situation improves, we will do the tests anyway. I am aware that the population needs to be increasingly informed.” As for escape routes, Manzoni anticipates that «next week there will be a services conference with the Ring Road and the Campania Region to bring the projects for the via Campana ramps to the conference for consideration. Thanks to the intervention of the Region we have temporarily – he added – recovered the car park in via Asiago”.

The missed bonus earthquake

However, the mayor underlines his “regret regarding the failure to approve the bonus earthquake”. On this point, he is keen to say that he will move forward. «It is a de facto necessity. If there are other parts of Italy that have benefited, I can’t help but imagine why the Campi Flegrei shouldn’t have the same treatment. We have no element that can guarantee the private sector to secure any critical issues. Either they provide us with more funding with a direct commitment or we will pursue the bonus earthquake route.” On the alert front, the mayor specifies that the person who will decide will be the Major Risks Commission following an evaluation based on the scientific parameters of the Vesuvian Observatory. Currently, according to the mayor’s data, there have been at least 350 reports, but the number could be expected to increase, 102 inspections carried out, 37 technicians involved, 11 fire brigade teams, 18 buildings cleared and 39 families evacuated.
