Saturday was an intense day: on the one hand, the emotion for the arrival of the Holy Father in Verona, on the other, the maximum alert of all the Police Forces, coordinated by the Event Security Management Centre, so that the papal visit took place in full inclusiveness but, at the same time, in complete safety.

And while from the early hours of the morning around four hundred men from all the Police Forces were in the field to guarantee all this, the Veronese State Police arrested two Albanian citizens involved in some Albanian criminal clans fighting each other for reasons of supremacy territorial: they were wanted internationally on charges of criminal association, murder, corruption of a public official, production and trafficking of narcotic substances.

Twenty hours of operations, coordinated by the FAST-SIReNE Unit of the Service for International Police Cooperation and twenty-two arrest warrants executed: fourteen in Albania, six in other European countries and two in Italy, in Verona.

The two arrested were intercepted by agents of the Verona Flying Squad on Saturday, while the faithful welcomed Pope Francis with emotion and the atmosphere in Verona was one of celebration and serenity. Both were already under house arrest for other proceedings against them: one of them – a forty-nine year old Albanian – was immediately intercepted by the police; the other – a thirty-six year old also of Albanian origins – had escaped from house arrest but, thanks to the searches immediately activated by the Flying Squad agents, he ended up in handcuffs.

The two wanted men are now in prison in Montorio, at the disposal of the Judicial Authority.

It should be noted that the criminal responsibility of those arrested will be ascertained only following the outcome of the trial with an irrevocable criminal sentence.
