Pescara: “Science shots” on World Biodiversity Day

World Biodiversity Day: even the schools of the province of Pescara, with “Science Shots”, contribute to the initiative established by the United Nations

Tomorrow, Wednesday 22 May, Scienza under 18 Pescara, in collaboration with the University of Milan, will present the photographs taken by students from schools in Pescara, accompanied by the explanatory sheet.

The day will begin at 9.30 in the council room of the Municipality. “Scatti di Scienze” is sponsored by the Municipality of Pescara and the University of Annunzio Chieti-Pescara, with the contribution of the PescarAbruzzo Foundation.

May 22nd is World Biodiversity Day proclaimed by the United Nations. We celebrate the richness of life on the Planet, because a rich and diversified environment is more sustainable and guarantees life and prosperity to those who live in it, be they human beings, animals or plants.

Many of the photographic shots and videos will talk about biodiversity, carefully observed in the plant and animal world with the aim of strengthening their conservation and protection. New this year is the consolidation of relationships with MBoa Lab, in particular with the department of Scientific Communication and Library Science.

“Given the success that this method of science communication has had here, in our city, we have arrived at the usual workshop appointment, in which girls and boys who are the authors of the selected photographs will present their work in front of an audience of young students of various school levels, teachers and audiences. On the same occasion – we read in the note from Su 18 – the work will be commented and explored. During the event, a video created by our friends from Cameroon will be presented and we will connect with them during the morning.

Scatti di Scienze aims to be a place of experimentation and discussion around the educational value of photography and scientific documentaries. In this field of teaching, which is still little cultivated, even limited experiences can constitute a significant contribution to focusing on theoretical issues and experimental practices”.

Individually or in small groups, the children took scientific photographs, indulging their curiosities, imagination and observation skills.

“During a class activity, some documented a significant moment of an experiment, others imagined and prepared the photograph before shooting; still others have captured the beauty of a particular natural phenomenon, often moved by the surprise of observing something unexpected; some, finally, thought up the script for a film. The tool of the card attached to the shot proved to be of great importance: it forced the children to reflect on the work done and allowed them to express impressions, interests in the search for explanations and questions arising from the observation of the image”.
