The ninth edition of Lipu’s Cicogna day returns to Calabria

RENDE – Returns to Calabria on Saturday 25 May the ninth edition of Cicogna daya unique and original event to spread knowledge of one of the bird species best known to the general public: the White Stork.

The Lipu di Rende Sectionwhich has been committed for years to the protection of the White Stork, a species protected and covered by community directives, promotes, in collaboration with the Lipu regional coordination, a day dedicated to this splendid and historic bird, a symbol of positivity and the bond between man and nature.

The White Stork is a species that everyone knows but that few have yet had the chance to observe in nature. Lipu organizes this event with guided visits to some breeding sites of the White Stork. It will be possible to respectfully witness the life of storks, learn about their history, migrations, habits and what threatens them, a unique experience directly in the field.

The White Stork is a species absent from Italy since the 16th century, but for a few years it has returned to nest in Calabria and to do so it uses artificial nests, a sort of large circular wooden platforms, which the Lipu di Rende has been using for over 20 years positions on pylons and electrical poles thanks to the availability of e-distribution.

There are currently 31 pairs of storks nesting, all in the province of Cosenza and almost all on artificial nests.

To observe these fascinating animals, for Stork Day, Lipu has selected some breeding sites in the Crati Valley where Lipu volunteers will guide the observation of the species, keeping visitors at a safe distance from the nests, so as not to disturb the animals, but staying close enough to live an exciting experience: seeing the storks taking care of their nest and their chicks, one of the most fascinating phenomena of dedication, affection and attachment in nature. A rare and extraordinary show that mixes emotion and science, passion and oral knowledge, against the backdrop of symbols with ancient origins.

Participation is free, but anyone who wishes can leave a voluntary contribution to support the White Stork Calabria project or even virtually adopt a pair of white storks, a sort of long-distance adoption, where anyone, individual citizens, families, school groups, associations, with a minimal donation can adopt one of the 31 pairs of white storks currently nesting in Calabria.

The “adoptive parents” will receive an adoption certificate with their name and surname and the georeferenced position of the chosen nest, a 70X100 full-colour poster depicting a specimen of White Stork in its natural environment and information material on the species.
Further information will be given during Cicogna day or by connecting to the website www.lipurende.it

A unique and original event not to be missed, capable of transmitting awareness and giving strong emotions. The presence of children and families is appreciated.

The appointment is set for 3.45pm at the A2 Montalto U.- Rose exit where in a few minutes you can reach one of the White Stork sites in the Crati Valley by car.
