An earthquake of magnitude 3.9 was felt at 9.46pm in the municipalities of the Phlegraean area and in Naples. The earthquake was localized by the operations room of the Vesuvian Observatory of the INGV in Naples at a depth of 2 kilometers.
The quake was clearly felt in Pozzuoli, generating scenes of panic and was followed by another major quake, magnitude 3.1, at 9.55pm.
A first shock, of magnitude 3.5, was recorded at 7.51pm. At 8.10pm there was a second one of magnitude 4.4.
“We are following the seismic swarm that is affecting the Campi Flegrei with great attention. At the moment there are no reports of damage in the municipality of Naples.” This was declared by the mayor of Naples Gaetano Manfredi. “As a precaution we have closed the schools of the Ninth and Tenth municipalities for the technical checks which will take place tomorrow morning. All our technical structures are operational 24 hours a day”, adds Manfredi.
Railway traffic haywire due to the earthquake
Railway traffic suspended, as a precaution, starting from 8.15pm, on a series of routes included in the Campania region affected by the seismic event which occurred in the evening with the epicenter in Pozzuoli. In particular, on the Naples – Formia line, traffic on the Villa Literno – Naples section was suspended; on the Naples – Cassino line, traffic on the Casalnuovo – Naples section was suspended; on the Naples Metro line, traffic on the Villa Literno – Naples S. Giovanni Barra section is suspended. Traffic also slowed down on the Rome – Naples AV and Naples – Salerno lines (Via Monte del Vesuvio). The necessary checks are underway by RFI technicians to allow regular circulation to resume.
