Matera State Police concludes preliminary investigations into a scam against an elderly woman
The State Police of Matera has served the notice of conclusion of the preliminary investigations to a 21-year-old Neapolitan man, under investigation for aggravated fraud against an elderly woman. The investigations were facilitated by the analysis of fingerprints.
The State Police of Matera has served the notice of conclusion of the preliminary investigations, issued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Court of Matera, to a 21-year-old Neapolitan under investigation for aggravated fraud. The crime, committed in September 2020, involved two unidentified men and accomplices, who took possession of 5,700 euros and several gold jewels belonging to an elderly woman from Matera.
According to reconstructions, the old woman (born in 1931) had received a phone call from a man posing as her nephew, urging her to hand over 4,000 euros for a package that would be delivered shortly. Shortly after, the woman was contacted again and induced to hand over another 1,700 euros and several jewels, with the promise of returning the goods once the debt had been paid. During the events, the woman’s telephone line was busy, preventing her from contacting her real nephew.
The Flying Squad’s investigations made it possible to identify one of the couriers already subjected to criminal proceedings in 2021. The identification of the second accomplice took place thanks to the analysis of the fingerprints detected by the Scientific Police on the package delivered to the woman and seized by the Police.
The authorities remind citizens to pay maximum attention to suspicious phone calls and not to open the door to strangers, contacting the police immediately in case of doubts.
