Mediterranean Games, the designers’ choice in Taranto

TARANTO – Mediterranean Games, the Municipality of Taranto turns on the administrative “machine”. In fact, the members of the commissions that will evaluate the applications submitted to guarantee the so-called architecture and engineering services have been appointed. In short, it involves the definition of the technical and economic feasibility study, but also the executive planning and safety coordination during future works. Furthermore, considering the importance of these facilities for the competitions and training of the Games, the Municipality has designated as members of the evaluation commissions personalities external to the Administration and who are part of the professional associations of architecture and engineering of various Apulian provinces . And this, evidently, is precisely to guarantee greater technical preparation during the examination of proposals.

In particular, there are 24 designers who are applying to define the design of the “Renzino Paradiso” stadium in Talsano (amount of work estimated at 4 million euros); 13 offers to draw up the project for a 3×3 basketball facility at Villa Peripato (1 million intervention); 21 for the athletics stadium better known as the camposcuola (3 million euros for the works) and 22, finally, to plan the restyling of the PalaMazzola (2 million euros for the redevelopment cost). However, as regards the swimming stadium with the related construction of two Olympic swimming pools (amount equal to 37 million), the project, as is known, will be carried out by the “Mdu” architecture studio of Prato.

For the record, last May 9th, the memorandum of understanding was signed between the government commissioner for the Mediterranean Games, Massimo Ferrarese and the mayor of Taranto, Rinaldo Melucci.

“For now, we will allocate 30 percent of the resources planned for the various sports facilities. My objective, or rather ours, is that in a few weeks all the projects can be completed in order to then go to tender – Ferrarese underlined – by the end of June or, at the latest, by the beginning of July”. Furthermore, the government commissioner had recalled that “to reduce the time, we turned to the public Sport and Health agency for the design and for the announcement of the largest tenders such as, for example, the “Iacovone” stadium and the PalaRicciardi and then – adds the government commissioner – we gave the task to another public company, Invitalia, to validate the projects”. Ferrarese again highlights that he “still has a Plan B available” for the more complex interventions (stadium and Olympic swimming pools) which could lead, if necessary, “to postponing the coverage of the two facilities to a later phase”, even if at the time he himself declares himself rather optimistic (“90 percent, we will make it”). Meanwhile, regarding “Iacovone” and the swimming stadium, by the end of the month, the technicians will deliver the respective designs.

Rinaldo Melucci, for his part, had reeled off some figures and stated: “Compared to the first draft of the master plan, the financial resources in favor of Taranto have gone from 90 to 161 million euros”.
