Legnano against mosquitoes | Sempione News

Treatments to contain the spread of mosquitoes began in April

Legnano – The specter of the spread of unusual diseases in Italy it is a risk that must be prevented, especially in a globalized world like the one we live in. The suspected case of Dengue registered to March 2024 in Busto Arsizio has raised the level of attention regarding mosquito disinfestation. The theme also arrived in municipal council in Legnano when, in the evening of Tuesday 14 May 2024clarifications were requested on the disinfestation activities.

Mosquito treatments

To prevent the uncontrolled spread of mosquito populations in urban environments they are mainly used two types of treatments. One is defined “adulticidal” and eliminates the insects when they are already adults. However, this intervention is not recommended, since it requires the use of insecticides that have a greater impact on the environment and other species of insects, with possible consequences also for humans if they come into contact with them.

The second, however, is defined as “larvicide“, that is, it acts on the larvae of insects and acts preventively. This treatment is most recommended by ATS. “Preventive interventions by CAP have been underway since April“, explains Marco Bianchicouncilor with responsibility for the Beautiful and Functional City, specifying that the treatments in place in Legnano are of the “larvicidal” type.

Dengue and vaccines

Instead, in Busto Arsizio, precisely because of the suspected case of Dengue (the patient was returning from a trip to Brazilwhere the virus is widespread), had been requested an extraordinary intervention which allowed the use of Adulticidal insecticides. On the website ofASST Valle Olona it is explained that the Dengue virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito of this kind Aedes (It doesn’t happen between humans). The disease can present asymptomatic but can also manifest itself with self-limiting fever and, in some cases, in more serious forms.

In addition to the preventive treatments implemented in some Italian cities, there are also vaccines against Dengue. The latter are approved by bothItalian Medicines Agency (AIFA) that fromEuropean Medicines Agency (EMA) especially useful for international travellers. In fact, the spread of the virus is also linked to the spread of non-native mosquito species that are spreading globally following urbanization and climate change.
