Two people died this morning in a mountain accident in the Swiss Alps. They were overwhelmed by an avalanche on Pigne d’Arolla, a peak that culminates at almost 3,800 meters, between the Matterhorn and the Grand Combin.
The victims are two athletes resident in the province of Lecco: they were practicing ski mountaineering.

Overwhelmed by an avalanche
Based on what has been learned so far, they are a thirty-year-old and a fifty-year-old, both residents in the hilly Germanedo district of Lecco, and both active in the Asen Park group. The two athletes were submerged by an avalanche on Pigne d’Arolla, a peak with a peak at 3787 metres, between the Matterhorn and the Grand Combin. The cause of the avalanche remains to be established. The news reached Lecco in the morning and checks are underway in the neighborhood on the actual identities of the victims.
A third climber however survived. Swiss rescuers responded to the scene with an Air Glaciers helicopter.
