Benevento: two officers in hospital riot in prison

Benevento

Very high tension in the Benevento prison, where a violent revolt by some of the restricted inmates is currently taking place. A heated situation, with a prison section destroyed by the rioters and two Penitentiary Police Officers seriously injured by the rioting inmates, armed to face the Officers.

“The situation is very serious”, reports Tiziana Guacci, secretary of the SAPPE Penitentiary Police Autonomous Union. “We are receiving alarming signals from Benevento of growing tension, with the common prisoners on the fourth floor, for trivial reasons, have devastated the rotunda, computers, glass and everything that was there. At first glance it would seem that they took colleagues hostage, two were taken to hospital. The situation is very critical and operators from other police forces are also present on site. It seems clear to me that there is a need for immediate interventions on the part of the ministerial and regional bodies of the Penitentiary Administration, which ensure order and safety in prison in Benevento by protecting the Penitentiary Police Officers who serve there. And it is serious that the signals sent by SAPPE regarding the constant and continuous outbreaks of tension in Campania prisons have not been collected over time”.

SAPPE General Secretary Donato Capece judges the conduct of the prisoners still in revolt to be “irresponsible and very serious. Our complaints are daily, with which we highlight that the prisons in Campania are under high tension. We want to respond to the theory of those who talk about prisons knowing little about them, i.e. from the Penitentiary Police side, with the concreteness of the facts. Which starts from an incontrovertible fact: the Penitentiary Police continues to ‘hold their ground’, despite the daily attacks. The problems of prison are real, as is the fact that critical events in penitentiaries are on the increase. It is clear to everyone that urgent measures are needed to curb the spiral of tension and violence that every day involves, despite themselves, members of the Penitentiary Police Corps in Italian and Campania prisons, for adults and minors. As demonstrated by what is happening in the Benevento prison”, concludes the leader of the first Penitentiary Police Union.
