“Un amore”, a show based on the famous novel of the same name by Dino Buzzati and starring the actor Paolo Briguglia, directed by Alessandra Pizzi, will be staged on Sunday 26 May at the Politeama Theater in Bisceglie, curtain at 9.00 pm

“Un amore”, cleverly adapted into the text in the form of a monologue, wants to celebrate the beauty of Dino Buzzati’s novel of the same name, giving it even more charisma and personality. The author’s only “erotic” writing is brought to the stage by the actor Paolo Briguglia, known for his numerous successful performances on the small and big screen, as well as on the theatre.

Directed by Alessandra Pizzi, Briguglia will give body and voice to the protagonist of the story, Antonio Dorigo, a selfish, superficial man, uninterested in sincere affections and a user of occasional sexual services with very young girls, even minors: all this until he meets Laide, a young chorus girl from La Scala who will enter his life. From that moment on, Dorigo will be able to experience the experience of a true love, of exemplary clarity, but destined to get lost in lies as in a labyrinth.

Buzzati lets the reader travel into the mind of the protagonist, in a whirlwind of obsessive thoughts that burst, like a river in flood, into interior monologues that take one’s breath away and let all the evil flow without any hesitation or shame, shedding light on all the his anxieties and the numerous questions that torment his mind. Similarly, even in the theatrical performance, it is precisely the series of rhetorical questions that explains the character’s thoughts in their contradiction. Paolo Briguglia, an eclectic actor, gifted with great sensitivity and interpretative intensity, manages to convey in the best possible way the mental mechanisms that are activated in Antonio Dorigo’s head. The space-time dimension within which the protagonists move is marked by the music: the choice of the soundtrack of pop, national popular dimensions, which respects the intense musical and songwriting production of the 60s – between Nada and the “in love with Milan” by Remigi – recreates that artistic and productive ferment of those years, years of great frenzy, where the economic recovery acts as a counterbalance to a bigoted bourgeoisie which slowly replaces human value with the value of money and social position.

Dorigo waits and asks questions, hoping in the meantime that things will go well. The fear that your loved one won’t show up for the appointment, the jealousy you feel in thinking that she could be with someone else, the anxiety of seeing her even just for a few minutes (just long enough to accompany her to the station): these are all feelings that Dorigo feels, but that any lover has felt, indeed, to use Montale’s words, that “all men who do not have their eyes and hearts lined with a rind of lard have at least virtually felt”.

But is the term Love appropriate? The love painted by Buzzati is extremely current: he perfectly paints the portrait of a morbid relationship, a misunderstanding, in which obsession is confused with love.

The show is part of the traveling exhibition “Metti Un Libro A Teatro”. A theatrical format produced by ERGO SUM PRODUZIONI, with the aim of bringing the great classics of literature to the stage. The initiative is supported by the MIC, as part of the FUS 2022/24 program and by the Puglia Region, Economics of Culture section
