Piacenza was also present today in Rome at the ceremony celebrating the 108th anniversary of the Battle of the Plateaus and the day of celebration of the Transport and Materials Corps of the Italian Army. Representing the municipal administration, next to the City Banner, is the vice mayor Marco Perini, accompanied by the inspector Manuela Tiso, the superintendent Marta Pallotti and the assistant Giuseppe Roselli. Today’s anniversary commemorates the very tough battle that was fought on the Vicenza plateaus between May and June 2016, in which the contribution of the first Army transport units was fundamental and, despite the difficult conditions and the advance of the Austro-Hungarian troops, they managed to to move men and materials promptly, thus preventing the encirclement of the Italian departments.

“It is an honor and a privilege to find myself here today in Rome – underlines the deputy mayor Marco Perini -, to celebrate the Army Transport and Materials Festival, a truly special occasion to give due recognition and express the profound sense of gratitude from the institutions to our Armed Forces. The Transport and Materials Corps is the backbone of the Army, responsible for the movement, supply and logistical support of our soldiers, at home or on missions abroad. Looking back in history, it is worth underlining the crucial role that the Army played during the Great War, as well as during rescue operations for populations affected by natural disasters. The commitment, professionalism and spirit of sacrifice of those who wear the uniform of the Army Transport and Materials Corps are a source of pride for our nation and a shining example of the best that our country has to offer.”

For Councilor Perini, today’s ceremony was also an opportunity to meet many top officers, currently or in the past, of military units stationed in Piacenza. Particularly exciting was the meeting with the Chief of the Transport and Materials Corps and Commander Tramat, Lieutenant General Sergio Santamaria, former director of the North Heavy Maintenance Pole and commander of the Military Garrison of Piacenza, who was awarded the merit in 2021 civic “Piacenza Primogenita d’Italia”, as a sincere attestation of esteem towards her by the Piacenza community.
