Sassari. “Son under arrest” scam, 2 young people arrested by the police

Both, with numerous precedents, had landed in Olbia a few days earlier.

SASSARI | May 16, 2024. The Flying Squad of Sassari has arrested two young people accused of attempted aggravated fraud against the elderly in flagrante delicto. Both would have landed from the peninsula in Sardinia with the aim of implementing the so-called “son arrested following accident” scam. The operation began yesterday, when the agents identified the suspects’ car in the industrial area of Predda Niedda. The two were followed to a nearby neighborhood, where they parked the car and started using their cell phones.

In the meantime, a woman called the police station reporting that her sister had been contacted by two men who had posed as a policeman and a lawyer. They had told her that her son had run over a woman and that, to avoid being reported, she would have to give them around 10,000 euros in cash or the equivalent in gold jewellery. The address given for delivery was right near where the suspects’ car was located. Therefore, the Police decided to intervene immediately, identifying them and thus interrupting the criminal action before the elderly victim could come into contact with them.

Accompanied to the police station, checks revealed that both of them, with numerous previous convictions for crimes against property, had landed in Olbia a few days earlier and that they had already pulled off two scams with the same modus operandi. They are now in the Bancali prison at the disposal of the judicial authorities.
